It’s easy to ensure that the pump you’re purchasing has been manufactured to hygienic standards because it will have an FDA or EHEDG certification. It’s important to reiterate that seals can be FDA approved whilst the rest of the pump is not. In this instance, this means the pump is not hygienic and should not be used on food-grade applications.
What is FDA?

FDA is the US Food and Drug Administration. An FDA Certification verifies that a product has been manufactured to meet high standards set out to ensure products being consumed or coming into close contact with humans have been treated by hygienic machinery.
EHEDG Logo
EHEDG stands for European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group. EHEDG standards guarantee that machinery has been designed and manufactured hygienically. This certification also ensures that hygiene and maintenance processes are maintained, allowing the pumps to support Clean in Place (CIP) or Sterilisation in Place (SIP). EHEDG proves that the pump has been tested for the application and has also been cleanability tested.
FDA compliance relates to the elastomers and plastic parts within a pump, whereas the EHEDG certification guarantees that the whole pump is certified and tested for use within a hygienic environment. For this reason, EHEDG is a higher standard than FDA. Typically, Sanitary Pumps are used in the Food and Beverage industries whereas EHEDG pumps are more often used in the pharmaceutical industry as they are generally a higher spec.
