Food Grade Pump Guide

When we talk about a Food Grade Pump, it doesn’t just relate to the food industry. Food Grade Pumps are high quality, designed to conform to strict hygienic standards for the Food, Beverage, Pharmaceutical and Cosmetics Industries. At TS Pumps we offer a full range of versatile sanitary pumps suitable for a number of different applications. Find out below what sets Food Grade Pumps apart from the rest!

What do I need from a food grade pump?

Food Grade Pumps are required to meet strict standards, ensuring that the whole pump is sanitary, not just the seals. This means the pump is manufactured from a high-quality metal such as Stainless Steel AISI 316L and has a high-grade finish for the pump’s surfaces.

It’s easy to ensure that the pump you’re purchasing has been manufactured to hygienic standards because it will have an FDA or EHEDG certification. It’s important to reiterate that seals can be FDA approved whilst the rest of the pump is not; this means the pump is not hygienic and should not be used on food grade applications.

Guaranteed Hygiene Standards

You want to know when you’re spending money on machinery that it’s going to be right first time. Don’t waste time, money or your product, get in touch with TS Pumps to ensure you’re getting the correct hygiene standards for your application.

FDA-approved-pumps

What is FDA?

FDA is the US Food and Drug Administration; an FDA Certification approves that a product has been manufactured to meet high standards set out to ensure produce being consumed or coming into close contact with humans have been treated by hygienic machinery.

EHEDG

What is EHEDG?

EHEDG stands for European Hygienic Engineering & Design Group. EHEDG standards guarantee that machinery has been designed and manufactured hygienically. The certification also ensures that hygiene and maintenance are continued, allowing the pumps to support Clean In Place (CIP) or Sterilisation In Place (SIP). EHEDG proves that the pump has been tested for the application and has also been cleanability tested.

What’s the difference between EHEDG and FDA certifications? Is one better than the other?

FDA compliance relates to the elastomers and plastic parts within a pump, whereas the EHEDG certification guarantees that the whole pump is certified and tested for use within a hygienic environment. For this reason, EHEDG is a higher standard than FDA. Typically, Sanitary Pumps are used in the Food and Beverage industries whereas EHEDG pumps are more often used in the Pharmaceutical industry as they are generally a higher spec.

Why do I need FDA or EHEDG certification?

A pump with FDA certification guarantees you are getting a pump that has been manufactured to the highest quality standards for your hygienic application.

CIP Peristaltic Pump

Peristaltic Pump

Peristaltic Pumps are a great option for hygienic applications, as the only part of the pump that comes into contact with the product is the hose. This means a Peristaltic Pump can be easily switched to a food grade pump by swapping out the hose for a FDA approved hose such as our NR Food or NBR Food hoses.

Check out our Peristaltic Pump hose options.

Within our range we also supply a CIP Peristaltic Pump, pictured to the left, which is perfect for ensuring your pump’s hygiene is maintained.
